Competa is a charming white painted Moorish village in the Axarquía area east of Malaga. It is in the altitude meter 600 and is located 18 km. from the Mediterranean Sea. It takes about ½ hour to drive to the nearest beach and then further ½ hour to the airport. Competa has approx. 3500 inhabitants and beside local Spanish charm many North European tourist and “Snowbirds”. This will do that you can always find an open restaurant.

The town is exiting with labyrinths of small narrow streets and squares. There are small grocery stores with freshly baked bread in the morning, real estates, small supermarkets, tourist office and shops which sell equipment for hiking and which also arrange guided hiking tours. They also rent out bikes. The nature park at Competa is perfect for hiking and tours on mountain bikes. The road in the area is used a lot by cyclist because of the roads good condition and is also good for mountain training. There is a new 25 meters indoor swimming pool and shops which sells the pride of the area which is sweet wine and raisins. For sure there are bars and restaurants where it is possible to buy menu del dia or tapas for a cheap amount of money.

Highlight of the year is Noche del Vino in the middle of August and like the town festival in the middle of July it is a noisy but also interesting experience. All the villages in the area have their own markets and festivals at different times.

If you need a larger or cheaper selection you should shop in one of the shopping centers or Lidl or Aldi along the highway.
